Dowty Group – Russian translation and provision of 6 Russian interpreters – President Gorbachev’s visit to UK

Communiqué has been around a few years! We celebrated our 25th Anniversary in September 2007! Perhaps one of our most memorable assignments (at least from our owner Avril Wood’s point of view) was the job we undertook for Dowty in 1989.

Mikhail Gorbachev had come to power in ‘85 and his reforms helped end the Cold War, bringing down the Berlin wall in 1989. In that same year he paid his first visit to Britain and, having expressed a wish to see a vibrant technology company, came to Dowty in Watford. A long-standing supplier to Dowty, communiqué was called upon to provide translations and six Russian interpreters for the visit and, as Avril has a degree in Russian, she was invited to attend.

The visit took place under heavy security but was a huge success. The local newspaper headline at the time was “She Met Gorby!”. Mikhail Gorbachev remained in power until the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.
